A significant amount of time was invested in researching (and iterating) alternative names. In case you have to engage in the exercise in the future, the resources I found most useful are at this link http://bit.ly/1Qp5wFx. Note the inspirational videos in the list – while not specifically about naming – are particularly uplifting for anyone thinking about leaving a well trod path to pursue their own vision.
It’s not clear to me (yet) if picking a name is more art, science, gut instinct or luck – probably a little of each. The alternatives that eventually emerged for me were:
On Wednesday evening (6 May), I pitched my e-story idea to a group of venture capital investors and entrepreneurs (each of whom had previously sold at least one business). We are not quite halfway through the entrepreneur program I am participating in at the Founder Institute, so the expectation for ideas was not to have revenue (or even an operating platform) yet. However, the goal was to measure the revenue potential and scalability of each idea, progress to date in moving from vision to tangible product or service and passion of the respective founder. The feedback this process generates is a huge help to all founders in the program, and resulted in a lot of soul searching - it helps everyone avoid marching further in a wrong direction (and otherwise focuses everyone on better explaining to themselves and others why their current direction makes sense).
Feedback for my idea was generally positive and very constructive – highlighting areas I already have in view for improvement. In particular, I need to bolster the team's tech / web experience (Let me know if you know of anyone experienced in coding web-based business solutions who is looking for a new challenge!)
In any event, the reviewers were positive regarding the scalability and revenue potential of the idea. So I keep marching (though the pace will soon quicken).
A first landing page for the business is now up (with the name reveal): www.epicgem.com
Tagline: Your voice. Your stories. Create your own EpicGem.
It is a work in progress and will certainly evolve. A proper logo is in the works, so should emerge in the next week or so.
